Small, but heavily used, this under 200 sq. ft. kitchen is truly the heart of this family’s home. Lacking storage and usable counter space, increased functionality was key, without the investment of major structural work.

Previously blocking a main traffic flow, the refrigerator was moved to the opposite side of the room. This allow the range to be properly centered. The central vacuum system (located within an existing coat closet) was hidden behind a narrow access door, allowing a wall of shallow tall pantries to be added.

To honor details throughout the home, plaster was removed from the existing chimney to expose the original brick and paneling added to the adjoining wall. Vintage-style pendants were added over the kitchen table. The table, a handmade family heirloom piece, was refinished to match the walnut-stain custom cabinets. Amish- and locally-made black windsor dining chairs, along with two auxiliary stools for extra seating, honor their Pennsylvania heritage. Durable surfaces including slate-look vinyl tiles and soapstone-look quartz suit the family’s high traffic requirements.
